Austin Clarke: Survivor of the Crossing
In this animated documentary famed black Canadian writer, Austin Clarke talks about his upbringing in Barbados, his early literary influences, colonialism, race, class, discrimination, and his friendship with Malcolm X. The discussion and contemplation on words, society, race, class by an author concerned with the plight of his people is reminiscent of James Baldwin’s words in Raoul Peck I am Not Your Negro. It is an important, timely, impactful portrait of a great Canadian writer. The combination of 2D vector stylized animation inspired by the rich color palette of Caribbean painters coupled with Austin’s raspy voice.
